Melbourne Grand Prix
About the FORMULA 1 Melbourne Grand Prix 2013
The Melbourne Grand Prix provides the opportunity to see some of the worlds fastest men reach speeds in excess of 300km/h.
The Formula One Australian Grand Prix is set in Albert Park around a huge artificial lake to the south of the city, circuiting over roadways through cricket fields, combining high-, medium- and low-speed corners, a couple of chicanes and several overtaking areas in braking zones.
The 16-turn circuit, which measures 5.3 kilometres in its current guise, was built utilising a combination of public roads within the park. The circuit is renowned as being a smooth and high-speed test for Formula One teams and drivers, and its characteristics are similar to the only other street circuit set in a public park currently used for a race in the Formula One World Championship, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada.
About 401,000 people turned out for the first race in 1996, which remains a record for the event.
The Albert Park circuit has seen the Formula One debuts of every prominent driver in the last decade. 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve made his race debut in Melbourne's first year of 1996, and became one of three men to secure pole position in his maiden Grand Prix. Other prominent names to debut in Melbourne are two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso, Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Raikkönen in 2001, and Australia's current F1 driver, Mark Webber, in 2002.
2011 FORMULA 1 Australian Grand Prix tickets offer an action-packed extravaganza of on-track and off-track activities for people of all ages to enjoy.
Besides a stellar line-up of elite motor racing, a host of other offerings will keep racing enthusiasts entertained throughout the day. There is the GP Expo, historic vehicles paddock and autograph stage. And celebrity-spotters should keep an open eye as the event is full of the A-list crowd.
The FOM has also announced that Melbourne will host the Australian Grand Prix until at least 2015.
