Touted as the world's foremost exhibit of the Southern Ocean the aquarium is home to thousands of aquatic animals.

Four thrilling interactive levels give visitors the option of underwater and over water viewing experiences. The 100sqm fishbowl viewing area reveals marine creatures such as sharks, stingrays, turtles, eels snapper and salmon swimming overhead. The Glass Bottom Boat Tour on the surface of the water gives visitors a chance to talk to divers and marine biologists and watch daily animal feeds and diver presentations.

Dive in the Deep End is an underwater guided tour with the chance for visitors to take the plunge in the deep end of the 2.2 million litre Oceanarium and have face-to-face encounters with grey nurse sharks, 7 gill sharks, giant stingrays and thousands of exotic fish.

A 60,000 litre exhibit features a shark conservation area and a marine animal nursery, including a sea jellies room. Sea jellies and Melba floating objects glow brightly under fluorescent lighting.

Aquarist for a Day programmes give high school students a unique insight into careers in the marine industry. The highlight of the programme is the Billabong Feed where students get to hand-feed freshwater fish, turtles, and eels. They also hand feed sea stars, hermit crabs and feed shark pups with a feeding pole.

Melbourne Aquarium is located on the corner of King and Flinders streets on the banks of the Yarra River. The aquarium is open from 9.30 to 6pm daily every day of the year, including public holidays. The entry fee for adults is $26.50; children aged 3-15, $16, with concession tickets available at $18. There is a public transport link to the aquarium from major rail stations, made easy by the recent creation of the Aquarium Superstop.
